Pre Christmas Declutter

It’s time for the annual Violet Posy household Christmas de-clutter. I hate doing it but I really, really need to we have stuff *everywhere* with having cleared out the kitchen and lost 4 cupboards. Currently my dining room table is buried under vases and bottles I’ve bought from Ikea on a whim and never ever used!

To make it less painful I think I’m going to a room at a time, rather than trying to do one big mass clear out. I think it’ll take a couple of weeks, but I’ve discovered that if I rush it and try and do it all at once, I get frustrated, bored and then I don’t do it at all.

I try to follow the decluttering advice of ‘if you haven’t worn it in 18 months then you’re not going to wear it’.  And if it’s still in the box it came in a year later, chances are it’s not going to be played with/used. So bearing this in mind I’ll be creating the following piles

To Keep, Charity, Recycle, Tip

So here’s the plan for this year

Lounge

Once again tip out the sideboard – we collect so much rubbish in it!

Clear out my magazine collection – I probably don’t really need them on the windowsill in huge pile do I?

Dining Room

DVD Clearout

Book Clearout

There’s a wooden chest in the dining room,  and I don’t know what’s in it – that’s probably a good place to start!

Kitchen

Doesn’t need de-cluttering just finishing!

Our Bedroom

Recently done so no need for work in there – hurray!

Miss L’s room

Books, toys and clothes all need sorting through. We had friends over recently with their 2 year old and I had no idea we still had as many ‘baby’ books as we do. So they all need to be moved on to Charity.

I always, always give Miss L the final say over giving away toys, or saving items. But I’m proud to say she’s really good about donating to charity. Finger’s crossed I can get all this done before Christmas!

So are any of you going to do a Pre Christmas De-clutter?

  1. I always do a prechristmas clear out. I am going to be listing some lightly used toys on ebay and also giving away some more that we have been lucky enough to review.

    1. All my friends have gotten fed up with me giving away toys as they’re in the same boat LOL! So I’m going to send some to the Charity Shops and some to the children’s ward I think this year. But I think the nicer clothes are going to ebay!

  2. I’ve been saying I’ll do one for a couple of weeks now, and not got very far. I really need to get the dining room decluttered in time for boxing day so it’s a nice place to eat rather than the junk room with a table in the middle.

My kitchen I have been tackling my doing one cupboard per day lol

  3. We do every year. The kids christmas fair asks for toys to sell and if you don’t want any of the proceeds (you can get 50%) then you just hand them over and they decide the selling price and give any unsolds to the charity shop anyway! Like you I give L&N final say but they do have lots of stuff so it isn’t that difficult.

FLylady has a good tip – 15 minutes at a time then take a break and then do another 15 mins. Or 30 if you are up to it. And never pull a whole cupboard out. You invariably get distracted or interrupted and shove it all back higgledly piggled. So do a drawer or half cupboard at a time.

I also came across this recently which was really inspiring

    1. That’s great you can get rid of yours and sell it, we don’t have anything like that round here – but I’m going to have a look and double check. What a great idea of the Snyders! Thank so much for the link, it’s given me some inspiration! 🙂

  4. I’ve been in the process of decluttering my house for the last few months…..We have a serious amount of stuff to look through after nine years of being together, three kids and four house moves….it also doesn’t help that I’m a bit of a magpie and pick up stuff in charity shops and car boots that I think looks cool…although apparently it does give my house a “homey” feel according to my friends 🙂 I’m currently clearing out books from the living room and dining room, selling a whole heap of my clothes on Ebay that no longer fit, putting old mugs, glasses and bowls (seem to have thousands) into boxes for Freecycle and generally trying to figure out what to keep and what to get rid of…..my kids aren’t too helpful though as they want to keep everything!!

    1. I’m the same, I have 2 boxes of vintage teacups that I started making into candles and then ran out of time and never got back to! But you’re right it does make it look more ‘homey’ to have nice things about. Good luck with your declutter too x

  5. Ebay is a wonderful thing for the declutterer! I encourage my children to have a clear out each year before Christmas and as well as donating some toys to charity they have sorted out the playmobil and sold it on ebay to fund their xmas present buying. They made over £200!! Its my turn now but I so love to hang onto my clutter eventhough it gets in the way.

  6. I really *need* to do this… particularly with the boys’ toys… so many things with parts missing or too young for either of them now. Luckily there’s a british heart foundation charity shop *just* up the road from me. 🙂

  7. Good thinking! You’ve really motivated to get de-cluttering now. I always have a major panic when the christmas decorations come down out of the loft and then I realise that I can’t put the stuff up until the house is clean and tidy. I then end up dashing around like a mad thing trying to get it done as quickly as possible to allow me to put the decs up!

  8. You wrote “I try to follow the decluttering advice of ‘if you haven’t worn it in 18 months then you’re not going to wear it’”. Why 18 month (never heard that much before)? Why does it work better for you as 6, 9 or 12 month? 🙂

Sadly you haven’t written how you decluttered your book and dvd shelfs.

    1. Hi Volker thanks for dropping by 🙂

I tend to go with 18 months, I pretty much know for sure that if I haven’t used it in that time, it’s never going to get used. 6 months is too soon for a hoarder like me 🙂

I’ve not de cluttered my DVDs and Books yet, it’s just my to-do list but keep watching for another post.
