What was I thinking?

I am an utter prat.  How long have I worked in IT….forever….

Did I regularly backup my iPhone? No I did not…

Why not? you may ask…..

Because it didn’t do it automatically via bluetooth or wifi like my old Nokia and I couldn’t be arsed is the honest truth.   Plugging it into my computer via a cable seemed so 1997 so I did it maybe 8 times in the 2.5 years I’ve owned an iPhone. The first one (2G) I had was so slow it was like pulling teeth to get it to sync so I left it and it was ok, no dramas.

Bought my shiny 3GS last summer and it’s been wonderful and the syncing was fast, but I still didn’t really do it. I’d gotten out of the habit and I still have to plug the cable which is a pain.  All was fine until yesterday.  I had a weird message the battery told me that it was at 3% so I left it as I wasn’t near the plug and thought I’d leave it to run down.  10 minutes later I looked at it again to plug it in and the battery was telling me 78%.  Odd, so I plugged it in and minutes later it was telling me 100%, I left it on the bedstand until this morning when I went to check my e-mail…IT WAS DEAD.  Dead, totally and utterly not working, plugged it into the mains and the red battery light came on. Fine left it, made breakfast came back STILL ON RED NOTHING HAPPENING!!

By this point I was feeling sick, everything in my life is on that damn phone, photos, video, contacts, diary….everything.  Tried not to panic and left it for a bit longer and went out for the day…7 hours later still on the same bloody red battery light!

So I scoured the web for a way to fix it and get my data back.  I didn’t want to take it to the Apple Store for them to just swap it out and to lose everything. But first I needed to un ‘stick’ it off the battery symbol.  I couldn’t get it working in recovery mode so I had to to a last resort reset.  This site told me how to get it into DFU Mode this resets it but of course it really, really helps if you have actually ever backed it up so you can get all your info back!!

I’ve lost all my Christmas photos, videos of the nativity play, new contacts, diary dates – you name it. I’m so annoyed at myself, so the moral of the story is backup your iphone and don’t be a dummy like me.  Oh and if I’m supposed to meeting you or have your number – please mail me x

  1. OMG I am so, so sorry for you. I will back mine up tonight. MadDad bought me an external drive to back up all the photo’s to as my kidac thing was full. I couldnt bear to lose them all

  2. This is a really helpful post. I haven’t plugged my iphone in to the computer since I first set it up 6 months ago. Like you it is my life. Mine has been doing wierd things lately like saying it has not battery life when it does. Turning it off and on seems to help. However, backing up is probably a very good idea and something I will do ASAP. Thanks for this post! Sorry about your nightmare.

  3. I am so sorry that you lost all your data. I do back up mine on a regular basis, but not every week. Maybe I should? When did you last update the os on your iphone? I remember when I got mine in September there was an update that drained the battery. I never installed but waited for the next. The most recent update (last week or the week before) seems to mess with the battery life as well. Maybe you should check up on that. You can un install it and return to the previous version of the os.
Making back ups is something I am sloppy with too. I have had a computer since 1996, I never made a back-up since. Until next year, when I almost lost all my photo’s. Now I have an external drive that I use to back up.
    Take care,
    Marianne.

  4. Sorry that’s happened, what a complete nightmare.
I know what you mean about it containing everything….mine does too. I do tend to put pictures straight onto the computer everytime I take new ones but apart from that how do you get all your contacts etc backed up?

  5. Same thing happened to me – had my 2G with no problems but a month after getting my 3GS it did exactly the same thing. Apple did replace it straight away (you do have to make an appointment though – can’t just wander into the shop) but I know that’s no help if you’ve lost everything – sorry!

  6. Oops! I can imagine your frustration but I do think it’s easily done and probably most of us are guilty of doing it. Or not in this case! I hope you manage to sort something out.

    CJ xx

  7. I’m so sorry this happened to you – it’s one of my worst nightmares. “Backing up the iPhone” has just shot to #1 item on my To Do List…

  8. I am so so sorry lovely, what a nightmare. Maybe you could get copies of the pics and films from friends and family who were there too??

It reminds me that I need to back up my laptop somehow as it too is full of photos, videos and writing that I have nowhere else. Hmmm, must save up for an external hard drive thing.

  9. I know exactly how you feel Liz – I lost all of my email a couple of weeks ago and it is a real nightmare. I would recommend signing up to Mobile Me – the apple app. Your iphone syncs with your computer and the apple ‘Cloud’ so your info is always safe. You can set up remote wipe too so if you loose your phone you can wipe it and lock it.

  10. Thanks for all the lovely comments and I’m glad that some of you have now backed up your iPhones so you don’t suffer the same thing. I need to do my laptop as well, it’s a job for the morning!

Chic Mama – when you plug your iphone into your PC or Mac you can decide what you sync in iTunes and there you can tick contacts, Calendar etc.

Sian – I’m still thinking about mobile me…it still involves me plugging it in and syncing it. But I do rather like the remote wipe ability 🙂
