I'm quite fond of being able to see my clutter too, so I think they're going to work well in our house :)

Bit late (came from Down came the cupboard post), but... I love open shelving. We took down a bunch of rather ghastly pine cupboards when we moved in and replaced them with open shelves. My MIL isn't so keen as she can see all our clutter. We have hooks on the bottom ones and hang cups and utensils from them. We also have smaller shelves on the other side (which were already there when we bought the house) which house all the herbs - and some very nice little espresso cups we got as a wedding gift. Again, the only issue is they can look cluttered easily (I'm quite fond of clutter though, so am not bothered).

I love open shelving. I took the doors off some of my cupboards and painted the inside white and it looked really fresh and open but Hubby didn't like it so I put them back on.

I have really limited storage in my kitchen so all of my crockery is out on an open tabletop and I find because I use it all the time it doesn't get too dusty. I just give the table a wipe down every so often as I wipe down my counters.

I also have open shelving in my pantry (which I've just posted about) and again it's not too much of a bother to wipe things down every so often.

I do know that my shelves where the things are purely decorative don't get wiped down often enough because I don't think about it.

Hi Tamsin,
If they are actual wood you should be able to use gloss paint, but if you have laminate like me, cupboard paint is really good. Crown and Dulux make it and you can get it in a few colours. Would love you see yours when they are done :)

I took the doors off some of my cupboards and it improved the look staight away. Anyone know what kind of paint I should use to tart the shelves up a bit. I presume it'll have to be some sort of specialist paint with them being covered wood (MDF I think???).

I have some open shelves which I love - they are tall slim metal catering style ones, thus no problems with dust. I have some posh teatowels from Heal's that have magnets attached, so if any part of the shelves are looking unsightly, I attach my posh teatowel to the sheld above and obscure the mess. I am sneaky!

I don't think I could handle it, but I do love the look of them. And I love those glasses in the last picture. Maybe I'd feel the need to display them if I had them, but I think I'd still just opt for glass front doors.
