iPhone Applications for Busy Mothers

I *love* my iPhone, possibly a little too much!  I’ve had in the last 15 years just about every make there is, and until the iPhone came out I was a confirmed Nokia girl.

I’ve had my iPhone since the day they came out here in the UK, in fact I actually queued up for it (shh don’t tell anyone I’m that much of a geek!

But the phone is a godsend, apart from all the obvious thing like I can get my e-mail instantly, blog, take photos, read all my rss feeds on google reader, listen to my music etc,  most importantly I can keep Miss L entertained with it!

So is a list of the best free apps I’ve downloaded from Apple App Store for Miss L

Scribble – children can use their fingers to draw their own pictures or scribble on photos taken on the phone, it’s the best app if you have children (see above!).

Cube Lite – great block game

Seismometer – Pretend your in an earthquake and see what the seismometer does!

Tris – Tetris by another name

Bubbles – kids can play with and make their own bubbles

Hanoi – problem solving for older children

Puzzloop – fun puzzle game

And a couple for apps for Mummy’s

Stanza – Download books to your iphone

WordPress – great for mobile blogging.

Remote – control your iTunes on your laptop from your phone.

AirSharing – make your iPhone into a portable hard drive.

  1. Hello,
I found your blog at Martha’s blog. When I saw you had a WordPress blog I was so happy. I’m new to blogging. And I’m learning everyday how to make things work. I was wondering how did yo get tags on your sidebar? Also what template did you use? I like your site. I hope you get a chance to visit my blog too. Have a great day =) !

  2. Hi,

Lovely to meet you and welcome to Violet Posy and Blogging 🙂

WordPress is great isn’t it, but not the easiest system to get cute things in the sidebar – Blogger is much easier for doing that. I’m using the Tarski theme, which is pretty adaptable and you can add your own pretty header.

To add the tags you need to do the following:

    1. Save the tag from the site you want to show by right clicking on it and choosing ‘save as’ – and saving it to your ‘My Pictures’
    2. Open WordPress and open a ‘New Post.
    3. Open the Media area and the upload the photo to there and then make sure you copy the LINK URL (this bit is really important!!)
    4. Close all of that down and then open Design – Widgets – then choose the Text Widget to add.
    5. In the body of the Text Widget you need to add the following code (but obviously with the details of your picture and website!)

The first part gives you the URL and the second the location of the photo.
    6. Click on ‘Save Changes’ and see if it’s there 🙂

WordPress doesn’t like anything with Javascript (pretty much anything that’s animated) so you can’t use those.

But have fun and let me know if you need any help! x

  3. Hi Liz,
Thanks for your quick response, but before it try the directions does this mean the tags on the side bar that are individual words that lead you to posts related to the word. For example, the word Family would lead you to a post regarding that word. Does that make sense? or do I just need to use a new template? Thanks again for your help =).

  4. Ahhhh I’m with you – I think? 🙂

Do you mean the word cloud on mine’s that’s under ‘Tags’? In that case you need to go back to Widgets and add ‘Tag Cloud’ and it does it for you. There is also ‘Category Cloud’ which does a similar thing but for Categories rather than the Tags.

I think you might need to change templates if it’s not under widgets though. I’ve not used the template you’re using so I’m not sure.

Hope that makes sense, come back to me if you need more help! 🙂

  5. Hi Liz… again,
Thank you for all your help. It worked! On my template tags are like catagories. Now I know. The light bulb turned on over my head (ha, ha). Thank you again.

  11. Thanks for this list. I have several of these on my phone too. I downloaded one this weekend that the kids just love. It’s called Dex ABC animals. I would add this to anyone’s favorites list.

  12. This is a great list. My kids love Scribble. The only one I would add is the i.TV application. It’s a TV guide but it also plays videos of some shows. I had a doctors appointment the other day and my 8 year old son was able to watch Arthur for an hour in the lobby.

  13. I love all the game apps for kids! I’m glad to see that kids have apps too. I know I get busy and to keep the kids occupied while grocery shopping is hard. But I found this FREE app from Make it @Home Website It is so convenient and easy to use.

Its great since you can get on the website and create and save customizable grocery shopping lists from actual recipes!
